Honoring the legacy of Vitalii Kolyvanov

What Happened

In August 2022, we learnt with deep sadness that a member of our community, Vitalii Kolyvanov, had unaccountably disappeared and subsequently passed away. This report serves as a summary of the events that followed, and an expression of gratitude for the incredible support and kindness expressed by our community.

Following a worrisome period of silence from Vitalii, his friends orchestrated a welfare-check revealing the unfortunate news of his passing in his Los Angeles residence on August 22, 2022. Aged just 35, Vitalii's family in Russia was informed of their son's tragic passing through his friends in the U.S.

Remembered as a kind, open-hearted individual, Vitalii left an indelible mark on our community. His adventurous spirit guided him to Miami, New York, and Los Angeles, where he forged countless friendships. Beyond these friendships, Vitalii's beloved dog Senya was a constant and cherished companion.

Fundraising Efforts

Amid the tragic news, our organization, RUSA LGBTQ+, in collaboration with Vitalii's friends, Timur, Tanzilya, and Dinara, launched a fundraising initiative. The aim was to cover all costs related to the document preparation, cremation services, transporting Vitalii's ashes to his family in Russia, and providing financial aid to his mother. Thanks to the overwhelming support from all donors, we raised $3987, eliminating the need to hit the initially projected goal of $5000.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the wave of support that surged following the announcement of Vitalii's passing. As we release this report on January 11, 2023, we remain inspired and heartened by the impact of support networks within our community. Vitalii's life serves as a heartfelt reminder of the importance of community, inclusivity, and mutual support, principles that we, at RUSA LGBTQ+, strive to honor and uphold.
