Responding to the COVID-19 Crisis

How RUSA LGBTQ+ Supported Russian-speaking LGBTQ+ Community

The COVID-19 pandemic took a significant toll on many communities, including the immigrant LGBTQ+ community in NYC.

Our community members suffered job losses and couldn't qualify for assistance; this worsened health disparities, and caused additional stress in an already challenging environment. Newly arrived asylum-seekers in our community faced particular difficulties with language barriers and inability to work when service industry was shut down.

In response to the pandemic's impact, RUSA LGBTQ+:

  1. From March through June 2020, the organization distributed $16,000 of its own funds to over 200 people — ensuring that those in need had basic shelter and food for another day.

  2. Volunteers helped community members access government assistance programs, such as unemployment benefits and housing resources.

  3. Launched additional initiatives including virtual information sessions, and several online LGBTQ+ Russian-speaking meetup to foster connections and community support during the time of isolation.

Impact of RUSA's Response

RUSA LGBTQ's response to the COVID-19 crisis made a tangible difference for many community members:

  • Some financial aid and the ability to access essential resources like food, medications, and housing have helped many people to avoid the worst.

  • Assistance with government programs helped community members overcome language barriers and learn about the resources available.

  • Online initiatives improved emotional well-being and connected community members struggling with feelings of isolation.
