Brighton Beach Pride

Brighton Beach Pride

About the program

The first Russian-language Pride in New York, held every year since 2017 on the Brighton Beach boardwalk in southern Brooklyn. Many LGBTQ+ people here still hide who they are, facing prejudice from neighbors and older generations shaped by state propaganda back home.

Our then co-president Lyosha Gorshkov started the march in 2017 as a stand against that discrimination. “We’re surrounded by Russians, but it’s like they’re all frozen in time with these old Soviet values,” Lyosha told The New York Times.

Our impact

More than a celebration: a march that makes our community visible, so every member feels seen, accepted and respected.

“What a beacon of hope you are for people everywhere… You are the model for that. You are the people giving them hope.”

Ann Northrop, activist and journalist, co-host of Gay USA, at Brighton Beach Pride 2024 (Gay City News)
