Immigration and asylum

How to apply for asylum, keep up with court, get a work permit and avoid scams.

This is general information, not legal advice: QARAVAN has no lawyers. QARAVAN does not help anyone enter the US and cannot arrange visas, invitations, sponsorship or evacuation. For your own case, talk to a licensed immigration attorney or a representative accredited by the U.S. Department of Justice.

We explain how the processes work; this is not legal advice. QARAVAN has no lawyers and does not provide legal services.

Start here

  • Apply for asylum within one year of your last arrival in the US. If you are late, talk to a lawyer right away.
  • Go to every immigration court hearing. If you missed one, check your case on the court's website (EOIR) at once and find a lawyer: the deadline to ask to reopen can be 180 days.
  • Report a new address to USCIS within 10 days and to the immigration court within 5 days, or letters will go to your old address.
