Libraries: a free card, computers and English

What a free library card gives you: computers and Wi-Fi, laptops, English classes and free museum passes through Culture Pass.

Start here

  • A New York Public Library (NYPL), Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) or Queens Public Library (QPL) card is free if you live, work, study or pay property taxes in New York State.
  • IDNYC works as a library card at all three systems, and BPL's Welcome Card needs no ID.
  • Free English classes are offered by all three systems and by the City's We Speak NYC program.

New York has three separate library systems: NYPL (Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island), BPL (Brooklyn) and QPL (Queens). Each issues its own card; IDNYC works as a library card at all three.

  1. Pick a convenient system

Cards are free for people who live, work, attend school or pay property taxes in New York State. The libraries list no citizenship condition; if unsure, ask at the branch. Choose a branch near your home or work.

  2. Decide which card you need

A full card is needed for Culture Pass, laptops and borrowing more. The quick no-ID cards (NYPL digital card, BPL Welcome Card, QPL eCard) work for e-books and some computer use, but not for Culture Pass.

  3. Bring your documents

A full card needs a photo ID and proof of address; IDNYC is accepted. At NYPL, teens 13 to 17 need no ID. Children 12 and under get a card with a parent's signature.

  4. Apply online or at a branch

At NYPL you can apply online and then visit any branch to verify your address and get the plastic card, or get it right away at a branch. If your address can't be verified, NYPL can issue a temporary card: email gethelp@nypl.org.

  5. Get passes with Culture Pass

With a full card from any of the three systems, from age 13, you can reserve free passes to more than 100 museums, gardens and theaters.
